Pay growth for project management roles in 2024

Many employees in project management roles are seeing higher pay in 2024, compared to 2023, according to the findings from our latest survey on pay for these roles. However, pay for those in the most senior roles has seen less movement.

The median basic salary for project managers in 2024 is £50,000, according to our research. Pay for senior project managers has also grown this year. Our analysis found that employees in these roles, who must have the more developed experience required to deliver multiple and/or high-profile projects with significant budgets and/or across varied disciplines, typically earn £65,056 in 2024. In both cases the findings show that salaries for both types of role have risen since our last study in 2023 when we found that typical salaries were £46,780 and £62,038 respectively, representing rises of 6.9% and 4.9%.

Our survey also collected data on junior-level roles in project management, such as project officers or coordinators. Employees in these support roles typically earned £29,345 per year in 2024 - up by around 4% since our study in 2023 when the median salary was £28,186.

Many organisations employ project staff at a senior management level to oversee multiple projects or major service/organisational change. The most common job title here is ‘programme manager’. Our analysis shows that basic pay for these roles is £82,160, which is slightly above the findings from our last study in 2023 when the median was £81,640.

About the research

The survey was conducted in October 2024 and received responses from 38 organisations across the economy, together employing over 300,000 people. Our analysis is based on data from the survey, alongside existing data from IDR’s online salary database Pay Benchmarker.
