New research reveals 2024 salary trends for support staff in education

Incomes Data Research (IDR) has recently conducted research on salaries for non-teaching roles in further education colleges, independent schools and multi-academy trusts (MATs) across the UK. The analysis, based on data from vacancies advertised between May and July 2024, provides valuable insights into remuneration patterns for various administrative, financial, HR and IT positions.

IT roles are highest-paid

IDR's analysis of support roles at IDR job levels 3 and 4 – covering secretarial and administrative tasks – reveals the following median salaries:

  • Administration: £25,400
  • Finance: £26,226
  • HR: £26,421
  • IT: £26,952 (the highest median salary)

Examples of jobs at this level include:

  • Administration: Office Administrator, Team Administrator, Receptionist
  • Finance: Finance Officer, Accounts Assistant
  • HR: HR Coordinator, Recruitment and HR Administrator
  • IT: ICT Helpdesk Technician, Technology Support Officer

Higher pay in the further education sector

Further analysis highlights sector-specific trends, with support roles attracting the highest salaries in the further education (FE) sector. The median salaries for support roles at IDR job levels 3 and 4 are:

  • Further education colleges: £29,512
  • Independent schools: £26,436
  • Multi-academy trusts (MATs): £25,576
